To celebrate the coming new year, the team at New Atlas hand-picked the best, most spectacular photographs taken in 2019. This “best of the best” gallery illustrates the top 50 photos from the best photo contests over the past year. From head-spinning drone shots to psychedelic microscopic photography, it’s a gallery you need to see.

(1) Sebastian Tontsch / 2019 Pano Awards
From a standpoint of pure spectacle one of the most impressive competitions from the last year has been the Pano Awards, a photo contest with only one major criteria – that entries must be presented in at least a 2:1 or 1:2 aspect ratio.
(2) Javier Rupérez / 2019 Nikon Microscopic Photography Awards
For those with a penchant for the marvels of the microscopic world, the Nikon Small World Photo Contest always delivers an incredible assortment of tiny treats. Running for nearly 50 years this is one of the oldest photo competitions in the world.
Two of the world’s larger photo contests also delivered the goods in 2019. The Sony World Photography Awards served up some incredible winners, whittled down from an astounding 320,000 entries. While the Siena International Photo Awards, only in its 5th year, cemented its place as a premiere photo contest with a truly remarkable array of winning selections.

(1) JoSon / 2019 Drone Awards
Drone Awards is the most important worldwide competition about aerial photography and video. It’ a project of Art Photo Travel Association, dedicated to a different photographic genre deliberately separated from being compared to traditional photography.
(2) Hernando Rivera Cervantes / Fine Art Photography Awards
Fine Art photography is a perfect instrument, which allows a person to communicate with the world and share their vision. The competition is open to everyone, amateurs and professionals alike. Entries are welcome from any country in the world.
(3) Tsz Ho Tse / TNC Photo Contest 2019
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) aims to “protect the nature that inspires the soul”. The contest received more than 100,000 entries from 152 countries or regions in the 2019 photo contest.
