The Academy of Model Aeronautics, the world’s largest model aviation association, has offered its members with liability insurance for recreational flying for over 40 years. The AMA announced yesterday that it is officially serving the commercial drone community and pilots by offering commercial drone insurance benefits for those who fly for business. Now AMA members now have the option to purchase commercial drone insurance at a special low rate.
Rich Hanson, AMA President, stated, “For more than 40 years, AMA has provided its members with liability insurance for recreational flying. Our new commercial drone insurance is a natural extension of our member benefits and comes at a time when the commercial drone industry is growing fast. Many of our members are flying drones commercially, or plan to do so soon, and have been asking AMA to provide commercial drone insurance as a membership benefit.”
According to the official release, the AMA’s new commercial drone insurance member benefit is not supported by your AMA dues. They want to reiterate that this new benefit is separate from the recreation flying insurance that AMA members automatically receive. It’s an affinity program with the insurance purchase between you and the insurance company directly, and not the AMA.
There are several levels of liability insurance coverage that are available including protection of $500,000, $1 million, $2 million and more.
Optional hull coverage is available for up to $10,000 per drone. Liability insurance includes $250,000 personal injury for each occurrence and $1,000 medical expenses for each person.
