Flying a consumer drone in rain has only been speculated in forums such as Phantom Pilots. Now, a company out of Ohio has just released an inexpensive system to waterproof any DJI Phantom 4 drone. With a 16 part patent pending ring system, an upgraded DJI Phantom 4 quadcopter can fly in any weather. The DJI Phantom 4 wetsuit is made out of a synthetic rubber called neoprene, which is the same elastic material that kayakers and divers use in their drysuits. Not only does the wetsuit repel water, but its padded layer also adds some protection against crashes. With the ability to fly in any weather, an upgraded DJI Phantom 4 can be used in nearly any situation.
DJI Phantom 4 Wetsuit
The DJI Phantom 4 wetsuit is comprised of a three part waterproof system. The first part is a 2.5mm thick wetsuit which covers 75% of the DJI Phantom 4 drone. Since the uncovered parts are already water resistant, the wetsuit covers the areas where water is prone to enter. The wetsuit also creates a seal, so any battery will be protected from water since it’ll become nearly air tight upon connection. The second part is a water protection ring system made out of compressed neoprene; the rings prevents water from entering through the motors. The third part is called a surge mask. When a drone hits the water, liquid mostly enters through the gimbal ring first. This third part system blocks water from entering through the gimbal and saves the drone from flipping upside down underwater. By using compressed neoprene, the surge mask protects the gimbal while allowing obstruction free movement for the camera.
This 6 Oz wetsuit system does not turn a Phantom 4 into a submarine, but it does allow a pilot to fly in rain and recover a drone that just landed in water, so this opens up more uses since a drone can fly in any weather. From filming waterfalls up close to shooting surfers catching waves, the DJI Phantom 4 wetsuit helps pilots get the best angles while protecting their investments from over splash. In instances where a drone is required for search and rescue missions, a waterproofed DJI Phantom 4 can help find those who are missing even if there is rain. Photographers can capture the moment right before a storm without worrying since the Phantom 4 wetsuit provides real protective coverage. Even though a waterproofed drone can fly in any weather, it’s still not advisable to fly during a storm since lightning can instantly fry a drone.
DJI Phantom 4 Wetsuit Colors
The only available color right now is the killer whale color or the orca color, which consists of black and white mixed colors. Other color options will be released in the future; the joker color will be red and black, while the neon color will be green and black.
How About The Lens?
Something like a separately purchased Rain X hydrophobic solution must be applied to the UV filter to help repel water off the lens.
A video will be provided to show the installation of a DJI Phantom 4 wetsuit. The neoprene is also applied like a sticker, so no disassembly is required!
How Much Is It, And Is It Only For The P4?
The $69.95 wetsuit waterproof system is only available for the DJI Phantom 4, Pro, Pro +, and Advanced, but the company is working on creating a wetsuit for the DJI Phantom 3 series.
The DJI Phantom 4 is one of the best drones since it has set the standard for 4K quadcopters with obstacle avoidance, so it’s no surprise that it was chosen to be waterproofed. If the wetsuit works as advertised, DJI needs to implement this simple yet effective upgrade into their future drones!
