A Hoversurf drone bike was unveiled at Gitex 2017, Dubai’s annual consumer computer and electronics trade show. Hoversurf, a Russian based drone company, teamed up with Dubai police to feature their battery-powered Scorpion 3 flying motorcycle. According to Gulf News, Dubai’s police force has plans to test the flying bike for possible field use.
The prototype introduced at Gitex can fly for up to 20 minutes. It can be recharged within three hours, and swapping out the battery for a spare takes less than a minute to replace. The Hoversurf drone bike was programmed to fly up at a capped height of 16.4 feet for safety reasons. The drone bike can travel 62 mph without a passenger and fly as fast as 43.5 mph with a pilot. It has the capability to fly as far as 3.7 miles away. The hover bike seen in the video was a special version for the Dubai police, and it survived extreme heat and dust tests.
Hoversurf Test in Dubai
The Hoversurf Scorpion 3 was also demoed by a 163 pound pilot who wore a special 26 pound protective suit. With a total weight of 189 pounds, the Scorpion 3 climbed 16.4 feet a second, which means it vertically flew about 11.2 mph to a height of 93.5 feet.
Since the Hoversurf Scorpion 3 can be used to fly past traffic, it can reach hard to reach places just like any drone. The hover bike can be flown without a pilot, and it can be used to transport payloads. Hoversurf also created a Cargo drone specifically designed to transport items, but Dubai’s hover bike is still capable of carrying goods to designated locations.
Scorpion 3 Price
The Scorpion 3 was estimated to cost $150,000 back when We Talk UAV covered its crowd funding release in February 2017. Prices for Dubai’s model may differ now since it was designed specifically for the police.
Dubai is a Next-Gen City
Dubai has plans to become a leading “smart city” by actually planning to use revolutionary transportation vehicles. At the end of September 2017, Dubai started testing drone taxis, which is part of their five-year plan to see if it is a viable transportation solution for everyday use. With the likes of the Hoversurf Scorpion 3 and drone taxi technology around the corner, Dubai is on its way to becoming a city full of tomorrow’s drones.
