Last week’s InterDrone conference hosted one of the best drone film festivals in the industry – and the work on display was amazing.

This year’s contest had 7 categories and offered something spectacular for everyone, everywhere, interested in drones.

In the Natural Wonders category, submissions featured gorgeous scenes from around the world, including New Zealand, the US, and Switzerland: UK artist Greg Leighton won for stunning footage in “The Philippines By Drone.”

The Humanitarian category offered amazing views of Hurricane Matthew, whales, a cattle feedlot, and the Ecuadorian earthquake.  US-based Nelson Aerial Productions won for their haunting piece “The Aftermath – Hurricane Matthew.”

In Cityscapes/Architecture, fascinating views of Bulgaria, Greece, Pennsylvania and a thought-provoking piece showing an abandoned and overgrown Psych center competed with winning US-based artist Mark Tammy’s “A New Day in San Francisco.”

Action/Extreme Sports did not disappoint.  Underwater footage showing a photographer surrounded by sharks – who might deserve a medal just because -competed with “Basejumping in Norway,” drones nabbing ocean poachers, and a desert ATV.  The winning “Poseidon,” by Air Reel Productions, takes the classic surfer and wave film to a whole new level.

The Industrial/Commercial, Real Estate, and Reel categories all offered gorgeous work.  Lush agriculture featured in “Beauty & Bounty” by US-based Doug Armknecht, winner in the Industrial/Commercial category and grand winner of the festival.  The vibrant colors in Jeff Fidelin’s winning “Acqualina Hotel and Spa, Miami FL” were a highlight of a collection of beautiful real estate pieces; and France’s Athenium Films won in the “Reel” category for footage that covered a stunning variety of settings, from high-rise buildings to the beach.

As the drone industry matures, drone films are getting better and better – and are well worth watching.   You can see all of the finalist’s work on the InterDrone website, here.
